Privacy Policy

We at the Association for Laboratory Automation (ALA) respect and are committed to protecting your privacy. That is why we have adopted this Privacy Policy. This Privacy Policy lets you know how your personal information is processed and used. We promise that we will take steps to use your personal information only in ways that are compatible with this Privacy Policy. The following discloses our Privacy Policy. If you have questions regarding this policy, please send an inquiry to info@labautomation.org.

What information are we collecting and how are we collecting it?
Every computer connected to the Internet is given a domain name and a set of numbers that serve as that computer's "Internet Protocol" (IP) address. When a visitor requests a page from any Web site hosted by ALA, our Web servers automatically recognize that visitor's domain name and IP address. The domain name and IP address reveal nothing personal about you other than the IP address from which you have accessed our site. We use this information to examine our traffic in aggregate, but do not collect and evaluate this information for individuals. Our Web servers do not record e-mail addresses of visitors.

How do we use single-pixel gifs?
ALA and its advertisers may use single-pixel gif images, sometimes referred to as Web bugs or Web beacons, to count Web page accesses and gather some general statistical information. ALA does not gather personal information through the use of these images. Our advertisers may use single-pixel gifs that can track personal information from cookies that may have been previously placed on a user's computer by an advertiser.

What information do we collect when you register for an ALA event or service?
If you are registering for an ALA event or service on-line, we need to know your name, e-mail address, mailing address, credit card number, and expiration date. This allows us to process and fulfill your order and to notify you of your order status. All of the information you enter via the Web-based forms on our Web site is encrypted and arrives to us securely.

In the process of data collection, we will ask your permission to include the information you supply in our computer records so that information about ALA products, services and activities may be sent to you. If you do not wish to receive information about ALA products, you have the opportunity to inform us by checking the relevant box on the data collection form (both on-line and in hard copy). Wherever ALA collects personal information we make an effort to include a link to this Privacy Policy on that page.

Data Export
ALA is located in the U.S. and your personal data will be held on a database located in the U.S. You are specifically asked to give your consent to the transfer of your data outside the European Economic Area on the data collection form.

Will we disclose the information we collect to outside third parties?

In the process of data collection, we will ask your permission to use this information to notify you of related products and services from relevant organizations through mailings conducted with our approval. You have the opportunity to inform us by checking the appropriate box on the data collection form or within your membership record that you do not wish to have your information shared with relevant organizations.

Credit card information will not be shared or sold to third parties for any purpose.

ALA will disclose personal information when required by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to:

  1. Conform to the edicts of the law or comply with a legal process served on ALA,
  2. Protect and defend the rights or property of ALA, or visitors to the ALA Web site,
  3. Identify persons who may be violating the law, the legal notice, or the rights of third parties,
  4. Cooperate with the investigations of purported unlawful activities.

ALA will take all reasonable precautions to keep the information disclosed to us secure. We are not responsible for any breach of security or for any actions of any third parties that may be authorized to receive the information either with your consent or in the circumstances set out above. ALA also links to a wide variety of other sites and contains advertisements of third parties. We are not responsible for their privacy policies or how they treat information about their users.

List Privacy Policy
ALA has a relationship with an independent, third party list marketing form that distributes the list to interested parties, for a reasonable price. Purchasing parties may then choose to disseminate announcements to individuals who request to receive information from other relevant organizations through mailings (both on-line and in hard copy) operated under our control. If you choose, you will occasionally receive mail or email from relevant organizations that have contracted with ALA and the third party list marketing firm. Our agreement with the third party list marketing firm prohibits the distribution of your personal information for anything other than the specific contracted mailing, and prohibits the onward transmission of your personal information to any further organization without your explicit consent. The use of the third party list marketing firm for this transaction protects your personal information from unauthorized distribution beyond the purpose of the specific contracted mailing. You have the opportunity to inform us by checking the appropriate box on the data collection form or within your membership record that you do not wish to have your information shared with relevant organizations.
